Winchester Christmas Market

Last weekend I wanted to take hubby’s camera out to Winchester to get some snaps. We headed off really early (for a Sunday) to get there before the shops started to open. We wandered around the Christmas market while people got to work setting up for the day and the ice skaters cleaned the rink.

We stopped off for a very early lunch (brunch?) as I couldn’t feel my fingers. I want to say we went to one of the wonderful cafes in Winchester but Simon wanted a pasty and I caved with a sausage bap. Really, if I could give in that easily, I should have gone for the sausage and bacon roll!

We walked around by the college and then down to the river which is my favourite part of Winchester. When I was little a family friend who lived there used to look after me. We’d spend hours feeding the ducks in the river. It always brings back a lot of good memories and it can be really peaceful down there.

I’m still getting to grips with Simon’s camera and out of the 150 odd photos I took a lot were blurry (accidentally left it in shutter priority mode), dark or just utterly dull. Here’s a selection of the photos I took, including some dogs because I snapped all the dogs that passed me.

Honeymoon reads

I took five books away with me to read on honeymoon and I read four of them. On my bookshelf this time round is The Little Flower Shop by the Sea by Ali McNamara, The Heavenly Italian Ice Cream Shop by Abby Clements, and The Olive Branch by Jo Thomas.

Seaside flowers

The Little Flower Shop by the Sea is Ali McNamara’s 6th book. I’ve read all her previous books so I knew I had to pick this one up as soon as I saw it. I fell in love with the characters in this book, they were so vivid and alive. I found the main character Poppy really relatable and I just wanted to keep on reading about her.

Ali has built a very strong sense of community in St Felix and it’s such a vividly described town – I want to live there! I loved all the characters in this book, from the bubbly and optimistic Amber to Jake the flower grower. Ant and Dec were firm favourites and all the characters were important to the storyline.

I read four books while on honeymoon and this was the one first. The characters stayed with me throughout the holiday and I kept thinking about them while reading the other books. I so hope Ali McNamara writes a sequel for this book, or I’ll just have to reread it soon.

Honeymoon reading

Ice cream heaven

The Heavenly Italian Ice Cream Shop is a sequel to Vivien’s Heavenly Ice Cream Shop, so go and read that one first – it’s amazing.

Anna and Matteo are running their ice cream shop in Brighton and making some yummy flavours. But even though business is booming, Matteo isn’t happy and misses his family and Italy. So it’s time for a new adventure for them to Sorrento.

Anna’s sister Imogen lives with her boyfriend in Brighton and is a photographer. But there isn’t much work for her abroad so she’s stuck at home.

This book is pure escapism and is a quick and easy read while relaxing on a sun bed. I loved the characters in the first book so it was great to find out more about their lives in this book. It’s strange that in the first book I liked Anna’s story more, but this time round I just wanted to know about Imogen. It’s a delightful and romantic read for the end of a hard day.

Mediterranean olives

The Olive Branch by Jo Thomas. After a drunken night out, Ruthie Collins bought an Italian farmhouse with an olive grove on eBay. She’s too proud to admit that she’s made a mistake so she heads to Italy. When she arrives she finds herself in torrential rain and battling a goat that doesn’t want to let her into the house.

As soon as I saw this book was set in Italy I had to buy it. It reminded me of the film ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’.  Jo Thomas has the ability to transport you to southern Italy, where the book is set.  The book was a bit predictable but I really enjoyed it. It was beautifully romantic and I couldn’t put it down.

I also tried to read Shopaholic to the Stars by Sophie Kinsella and I just couldn’t read it. I found that Becky Brandon was just making me cringe and I couldn’t relate to her. I remember struggling with the last one too, so maybe I’ve just grown out of the series.

What are you reading at the moment?

steaming cup of tea in bed

I can’t be the only one who’s going through a major decluttering process at the moment. I’ve come back from honeymoon and all I’ve wanted to do is remove items from my home. Whether that’s clearing out my wardrobe or empty my kitchen cupboards. I just want all the knick-knacks gone!

Decluttering

I share a wardrobe with my hubby, I say share, I take up a good two thirds. I also have a chest of three drawers full of clothes. Those drawers are mostly filled with casual wear, the clothes I wear on a weekend. Why do I need THREE drawers full of clothes for a couple of days a week? I’m pretty certain my go to outfit it jeans and a jumper, and most weekends if my pale heart jumper has been through the wash then that’s what I’ll wear. So why do I need 14 other jumpers?

I don’t like any of the rules for a capsule wardrobe as I’d never keep to them but I do want to cut my wardrobe down. Give away or throw out the pieces that I really don’t wear or feel crap in and just focus on the outfits that make me feel happy. I want a happiness wardrobe.

I have around 150 nail polishes to go through next. Why do I need so many? How many shades of green am I actually going to wear? You can tell mint is my favourite colour, can’t you? I haven’t really been painting my nails recently as they’ve been quite brittle, so all those polishes have been sitting in a huge bag just waiting to be used. I don’t even want to think how much money I’ve spent on them when now all I want to do is give them away or put them in the bin.

Presents

While decluttering the house I’ve come upon presents that haven’t seen the light of day yet. It really made me think what is the point in presents. I’m probably going to sound really ungrateful, but what’s the line between getting something nice for someone and getting something that’s just going to sit in the back of a wardrobe. It’s a waste of money. Simon and I have decided that we won’t give each other Christmas presents any more and instead have an experience like a few nights away or horse riding lessons.

Appreciate family time

That brings me nicely on to my third point: spending more time with family. It was amazing to see everyone at our wedding, some we hadn’t seen in ages. It really brought back to me the importance of family. I actually really missed them the days after the wedding. I want to spend more time with family and get to know my in laws more. But more importantly for me is spending quality time with my husband, not just turning on the telly and watching Netflix until bedtime. He’s teaching me how to use his DSLR and I love it because it gets us out the house and doing something fun together. It also means we get offline for a bit and that’s never a bad thing.

Are you going through a decluttering phase? What do you think of the whole capsule wardrobe thing?

DIY wedding guestbook instax mini 8 camera

Wedding guestbooks should be easy, right? They’re just a book that people write a note in and pass around. But Pinterest made me want more. I also didn’t want a book full of very similar well wishes, I wanted it to be a bit more creative.

I’ve seen a lot of bloggers with these instant cameras so I jumped on the bandwagon and bought one. I didn’t want a full on photobooth at the wedding but I wanted to give the guests something to play with. I trained up my ushers on how to use it and set them on photo duty. Everyone loved taking snaps and selfies of themselves and sticking them in the guestbook with washi tape.

DIY wedding guestbook photobooth

It was lovely to flick through the guestbook the day after the wedding and see everyone’s smiling faces staring back at me with their kind words. There are lots of extra shots taken too which I plan on sticking in the back of the book.

Here’s what I used for my guestbook set up:

  • Guestbook from Ginger Ray
  • Fujifilm Instax Mini 8 Instant Camera
  • 100 shots
  • Washi tape
  • Sharpie pens in metallic colours
  • Chalkboard sign from Hobbycraft

Shake it like a polaroid picture wedding guestbook sign

To make the sign I cheated. There’s no way I could draw all of that in chalk. Simon designed my sketch in Photoshop, printed it out and stuck it on. I was really happy with how it turned out.

I love having all these memories that I can keep and look back on. Using the camera got everyone involved and I’d definitely recommend it. Plus now I get to keep using the camera!

Crochet baby star blanket

This year I ticked off another item on my 30 before 30 list – I completed a crochet blanket. Well I haven’t technically completed it as I’d written specifically a granny square blanket and as you can see this is definitely not square shaped! But you know what, I’m going to let it slide as I’m really impressed I actually completed a blanket!

I created this star-ish shaped baby blanket using aran yarn in white, pale yellow and grey. I love this colour combination! I used the Rainbow Ripple Baby Blanket pattern, which I’d found on Ravelry. I like to think of it as a star rather than a ripple.. it could be an exploding star? Or a star like the sun?

Using aran yarn and a 5mm hook it was reasonably fast to make. Well it actually took me 8 months according to Ravelry but I started it around Christmas time and left it for months sitting in a basket. I decided to get back on it in July and finish it while watching marathon sessions of Once Upon a Time.

I made one glaringly obvious mistake, which I didn’t notice until it was far too late. I just missed a stitch. I don’t know how. I also have one panel where there are say 19 stitches on one side and 21 on the other instead of 20 20. Again, no idea how I did it, but you can’t really notice this mistake so hey ho.

If you’re after a quick baby blanket that’s a bit different, I’d definitely give this a go. And no, I’m not pregnant, just thought a baby blanket would be a lot quicker to complete than a throw! Does that count as cheating?

I find crochet really relaxing and it stops me fidgeting so much while watching TV or a film. I have a few Christmassy crochets on my to do list that I hope to share nearer the time.

Do you crochet? What are you favourite blanket patterns?

Project Life cards

I’d seen Project Life in my local Hobbycraft last year and was really intrigued by it but it wasn’t until I started seeing it crop up on my Instagram and YouTube that I decided it needed a further look. I really wanted to start printing my photos and using them. Now, a word of warning, listen to people who say you don’t need a Core Kit or lots of different cards. It is addictive.I hadn’t even started before I somehow ended up with a core kit, a value kit and several smaller kits from Facebook groups, TK Maxx and Hobbycraft. I think the worst was TK Maxx which had not only Becky Higgins kits but also Pocket Pages collections. When things are reduced I have a tendency to buy them – something I really need to work on! I didn’t even have an album at this point.

Project Life Southern Weddings collection

I wanted to start out with one album for all our wedding and honeymoon photos. I found a lovely person on Facebook who sent me 60 cards from the Project Life Southern Weddings collection and I also picked up the chipboard stickers from the same range.

I then found lots of other cards which were too pretty to resist. I now plan on starting a new album in January (it’s been so incredibly hard to resist the Christmas sets!). I’m not going to be doing it weekly, as working full time I can go weeks without doing anything worth noting. I’ll try and do it monthly over however many pages it takes. Otherwise it will just be done by events and in a chronological order. I think either of these will work best for me.

One of the first things I found was a 4×4 Instagram album set in Home Sense. I’ve been using it pre-wedding as a test really to see if I can do it. I haven’t been very creative with it but it’s been lovely to print out photos and see them all in an album. This little album tells me I spend most of my time in the New Forest on the weekends.

Do you scrapbook or do photo albums?

top table wedding lantern

Doing your own wedding table numbers is so easy! I picked up these lanterns from IKEA for £2 each and then found some fancy luggage tags in The Range. I actually bought 3 different types of tags as I kept finding them but these were the prettiest.

I’m not great at freestyling fancy lettering so I printed out the numbers and “Top Table” in a font I liked and then copied it on the tags in pencil before going over them in pen. The ink soaked into the tags a bit but I really like how they turned out.

For the lanterns I used Yankee Candle tea lights as they lasted all evening during the reception. We used succulents in ramekins and our pew end flowers to decorate the tables. I was so pleased with how it all turned out.
