There are certain things that I really wish someone had told me while I was pregnant. The main one being that breastfeeding can be an absolute nightmare. But apart from that, here are 3 things I wish I’d known about post pregnancy.

Eleanor and I - I can forgive my postpartum mum tum because I have this little one to show for it. She's my absolute world.

The mum tum

While pregnant I did swimming and yoga. Now I do nothing except walking the pram around. I always said that I’d give myself until after Christmas to shift the weight. Three months later and I still have that weight! I went for one run and then I had a month long period (see below) and would rather curl into a ball than don my trainers (my running trainers that is, I live in my Sketchers now). I wrote a whole post on how I’d battle the mum tum afterwards.

I’m supposed to be running the New Forest 10km in September in under one hour… I don’t know if that is actually feasible without some magic in those trainers. I wonder if you could have electric powered trainers like an electric bike. You know, to help you get up the hills!

My house is a pigsty

I thought I would be able to catch up on the cleaning and tidying when Eleanor is asleep or keeping herself entertained on her mat or jumperoo. But oh no, she likes attention and only sleeps for 30 minutes. She naps in her snuzpod so yes I could quickly run the hoover around or mop the floor. But generally in those 30 minute nuggets I find myself curled up on the sofa with a cup of tea wishing that I could be asleep too.

I am lucky that my mum pops over a couple of times a week to play with Eleanor so I can get some chores done. I am really debating getting a cleaner in! I think the lighter evenings will help too as it will be daylight when Eleanor goes to bed so I’ll want to do more in the evenings besides watching telly and eating winter comfort food.

The first period

Oh my god. I don’t know if I’m alone in this but that first proper period since having a baby was hell. And still is 4 weeks later! I swear the first few days were worse than the post labour bleeding. It was like something out of a murder scene on a TV show. I asked my GP and they said it was normal for the first one to be horrific. I’m just hoping the rest won’t be so bad.

I really wish someone would have just mentioned it to me so I could have been prepared! And my god it hurt too. It throw me back to the pain I felt at the beginning of labour.

What did you wish you’d known about post pregnancy? Any surprises?

I have really got back into my bullet journal this month. I’ve been using weekly spreads rather than dailies and I’ve been switching around some of my favourite layouts. Here are my top 5 weekly spreads. If you’re new to bullet journal then check out my bullet journal setup post.

Bullet Journal Weekly Spreads Ideas

1. Traditional diary layout

When I know I have a lot going on in a week then this is the layout I go for. It’s easy enough to draw out and I can clearly see what I’ve got going on. It gives me room for all the appointments as well as a few to do items.

Bullet Journal Weekly Layout Ideas

2.  One page weekly spread

Straight and to the point with this single page spread. I love having one column for tasks as I rarely get to do something on the day I want to get it done. So it’s easier for me to have weekly tasks some weeks. I’ll make tasks with an asterisk if it’s really important.

Bullet Journal Weekly Spreads Ideas

3. Weekly with meal planner and habit tracker

If I have a bit more time I use this layout. It gives me a box for meal planning dinners and a habit tracker. I can then use all the empty space for tasks, doodles or notes.

4. One page boxed layout

A really simple box design to use when I’m in a hurry and feeling a bit lazy with bujoing. It does the job!

Bullet Journal Weekly Spread Ideas

5. Room for notes layout

When I have major to do lists then this is the spread for me. I can literally brain dump everything I want to get done in the week and still have a bit of space for events.

On my YouTube channel you can find all my monthly bullet journal setup videos.

What’s your favourite weekly layout?

These are my top 5 bullet journal weekly spreads and layouts. I have one for when I have lots of appointments or when I have a quiet week but loads to do. I switch between layouts depending on what my week looks like.

Meal planning is so important for us now that we are weaning. If I don’t have a meal plan then Eleanor probably wouldn’t be fed. We’re doing baby led weaning so I have to make sure that what we’re eating is suitable for her or I have something else for her in.

We’ve been weaning for over a month now so she pretty much usually tries everything that we eat at each meal. There are still some evenings where I really want a cheeky take away or a pizza so we are working out how to fit those in too. If you want to know how we started weaning, here’s a video on Eleanor’s first foods.

My baby led weaning meal plan for a family of 3. Eleanor is 7 months old and eats mostly what we eat so it's important that I do a meal plan.

This week’s meal plan I’ve broken down into breakfast, lunch and dinner and I’ll list the latter two meals below. Breakfast is usually crumpets, marmite on toast or fruit for Eleanor. I can’t stop eating crunchy nut cornflakes so I usually end up having two small breakfasts. Anyway, here’s this weeks meal plan!

Monday 24th

Lunch: (out) Flapjack and pear

Dinner: Toad-in-the-hole, mash and broccoli

Tuesday 25th

Lunch: Cheese on toast, pear

Dinner: Pasta bolognese

Wednesday 26th

Lunch: Jacket potato and cheese

Dinner: Sausages with scrambled egg on toast

Thursday 27th

Lunch: Jacket potato and cheese

Dinner: Tuna and tomato pasta

Friday 28th

Lunch: Pinwheels

Dinner: Fishcakes with broccoli and fine beans

Saturday 29th

Lunch: Pinwheels

Dinner: Homemade pizza

Sunday 30th

Lunch: Chicken curry

Dinner: n/a

Do you write a meal plan?

I’ve found since we started weaning that we’ve become a bit healthier. And also we’ve saved money. We’re not always buying ready meals anymore as I’m cooking everything from scratch. You can find out what I spent in this week’s food haul video below.

I am determined this summer to get our kitchen sorted. We’ve been in this house over two years now and it is still a blank canvas. Designing Eleanor’s nursery has given me the decorating bug. I am desperate to make my kitchen more liveable, have more storage and be more of a central hub of the home.

Here are a few of the products that I am looking at to make my kitchen more homely.

Polka Dot Tea and Coffee jars

I have the Emma Bridgewater Polka Dot wooden spoons utensils jar and I am desperate for the matching tea and coffee jars. They are beautiful and I have quite a few of her mugs. I love her designs and these would add a bit more colour to the room.

Brick wallpaper

I love the idea of having an exposed brick wall. As that isn’t at all possible then if I can find some aged red realistic brick wallpaper then I’ll be happy. Any recommendations on some realistic wallpaper?

Bread Maker

As I don’t have time to bake I think a bread maker would be so useful like these Breadmakers by Panasonic. Eleanor loves bread and I do worry about the amount of salt in store bought loaves. There are some baby led weaning bread recipes that I can’t wait to try. I really want to make her some scones, which you can do with some of these bread makers.

Mug Shelf

All these pretty Emma Bridgewater mugs deserve to be on show. I want to put a shelf up somewhere to display them. Or have them hanging down but I fear if I put hooks into my cabinets they will fall down – they’re already warping under the weight!

Cake Mixer

Ever since I was at university I have wanted a stand mixer. Of course it has to be a KitchenAid in Pistachio. I don’t have as much time to bake as I used to but I still really enjoy it. I used to always make cupcakes or banana bread. There used to always be something new in the oven. Now instead I bake sugar free treats for Eleanor.

Trolley

The problem with some new build houses is the complete lack of storage. All our cupboards in the kitchen are full and we need more space. I like the idea of getting a kitchen trolley. What I have in mind is to do an IKEA hack of the KALLAX with some chopping boards on top. I’ve obviously been spending too much time on Pinterest.

Tiles

Oh please, pretty please can I have some tiles? We cook a lot of bolognese and you can definitely tell that by the state of the walls surrounding the hob. I’d love to have tiles all they way around the units. I’d like plain white ones but really, just give me something easy to clean! I’m debating between white or a sage green. What do you think?

Is the kitchen the heart of your home?

I’ve been hankering after a tablet for a while as my phone battery is always dying and my laptop has seen much better days. So when I was kindly offered an Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet to review, I jumped at the chance. It meant I could watch YouTube on a larger screen and dual screen watching Netflix and while tweeting on my phone.

It’s been some time since I last reviewed a piece of tech. I bet you didn’t know that it used to be a part of my job. There’s even a YouTube video out there of me reviewing a phone for it’s launch – way before I started on YouTube myself. Anyway, I took the tablet away with me for the Easter weekend and here are my thoughts.

Design

Amazon have released the Kindle Fire in 3 other colours and I absolutely love the blue colour. I was quite tempted by the pink but you can’t go wrong with a blue. The trim round the edge of the screen is blue too.

The 7″ tablet is the perfect size for my small hands. It’s easy to type with one hand and to read a book or look something up while holding my baby in the other arm.

It says it has up to 7 hours battery life and when I went away I used it a lot in the evenings and I didn’t need to charge it. I was pleasantly surprised as my phone needs charging at least once a day.

Fire OS

Having used iOS and Android before it took me awhile to get used to the Fire operating system. I really liked how the reading experience is just a swipe away. I have had a Kindle for years so when I swiped to the right and saw all my books synced I was pleasantly surprised. My Kindle has been gathering dust as I haven’t had chance to read, so it reminded me of some of the great books I’d bought and need to get stuck in to.

Apps

Ok so the Amazon App Store doesn’t have the plethora of apps that you can get elsewhere but it does have some really good ones. Here are a few of my favourites:

  • Netflix
  • Spotify
  • iPlayer
  • Pinterest
  • Trello
  • Kindle Books
  • Audible
  • AirBnB
  • Twitter
  • Feedly

Blue Shade

Blue Shade minimises the blue light on your screen by using special filters. It makes reading at night a lot more comfortable on my eyes. You can also change the brightness so if it’s a really dark room you can dim it even more.

I keep reading how you should leave your tech alone an hour before bed so that you sleep better. So turning on Blue Shade gives me an excuse to check Twitter. Now I just need to move my baby into her own room so I can read in bed every evening again.

Multiple profiles

I really like that the Kindle Fire has multiple profiles. It means if my hubby borrows my tablet he can log into his own account and read the news on his own browser rather than using mine. It also means I can have a kids account for Eleanor when she’s older. You can have 2 adults and 4 child accounts on the tablet.

And can I just mention the price. At the moment as an Easter special the Fire Tablet, 7” Display, Wi-Fi, 8 GB (Black), is currently priced at £34.99 and you can find it on www.amazon.co.uk. I’ve not seen a tablet that cheap before. If you’re after something for just browsing the web, a few games, books and catching up on telly then this is perfect. I missed the first episode of this season of Doctor Who and I caught up on the tablet using the iPlayer app on Saturday night.

Do you have a tablet? If so, what do you primarily use it for?

Disclaimer: I was kindly sent the Amazon Kindle Fire Tablet to review. All opinions are my own honest views.

I’ve been really getting into podcasts recently. They’re so easy to listen to in the car or while doing the chores. I used to watch YouTube videos while doing the washing up but I kept getting worried that my phone would vibrate and then slip into the sink! Here are a few of my favourite podcasts that I’m listening to at the moment.

Heart, Soul & Hustle

Heart, Soul & Hustle is a podcast by Zach Spuckler. It’s aim is to help you make your business a success. I wouldn’t call my blog a business as it’s a hobby so I don’t listen to all his episodes but there have been some great tips in episodes about content creation and how to be a visible introvert – one thing I definitely struggle with. If you want to take your business to the next level then this is one for you.

Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield

On a similar theme, Amy Porterfield’s Online Marketing Made Easy has some amazing episodes to get your business of the group. The ‘How to get overwhelm to eat your dust’ episode was really helpful. There are tips on how to beat Facebook’s algorithm and how to get started with Facebook live (which I won’t be doing, I don’t even have a Facebook page). But I’ve found these episodes really helpful for my day job as a social channel manager when not on maternity leave.

Hashtag Authentic

A recent favourite and a British podcast! Sara Tasker talks about blogging and Instagram so this is definitely right up my street. It’s some good honest advice on how to improve your Instagram game. I really enjoyed her episodes on comparison and following your creative interests. She also introduced me to AllThatIsShe who is an awesome Instagrammer (why wasn’t I following her already).

The Infinite Monkey Cage

The Infinite Monkey Cage wouldn’t be my usual choice of podcast but it’s one of my husbands favourites so we listen to it in the car. I really enjoyed the episode about gambling and not because I love hitting the casinos. It taught me how to win at Monopoly which is far more important in my eyes – although wouldn’t make me any richer. It’s a podcast featuring Brian Cox and Robin Ince and it usually has some scientists and comedians on the show too. There are topics ranging from the oceans to the maths behind love and sex. It can get a bit too sciency for me, I’ve always been more interested in the arts, but it can be quite funny too.

Amazing If

The Amazing If podcast is by Sarah and Helen and covers tools and advice on your career and future. It’s a relatively new podcast but I’ve found it really useful so far. I like that they’re a lot shorter in length than some other podcasts I listen to so good for when doing the dishes. I really enjoyed the episode about a fear of people not liking you. It’s something that I’ve definitely thought about when in the workplace.

Do you listen to podcasts? What are your favourites? Any recommendations?

I am so excited to start weaning Eleanor next month. We are waiting until she is 6 months old so we can follow baby led weaning (BLW).

I am fully expecting it to be a complete mess and I don’t suppose much will be eaten for awhile but it does look like lots of fun. I’m not going to go into the pros and cons of BLW versus traditional weaning (purees) here. I’m sure if you google it there will be lots of information out there. Also, I have read Weaning Made Easy by Rana Conway which does cover both methods and is really useful, especially if you plan to do a bit of both.

Baby led weaning cookbook

I’ve decided to do BLW because I’m a bit lazy to be honest. As well as all the positives behind BLW, it seems to much easier just to cook for me and my husband and then share our food with Eleanor. Her first meal is likely to be a roast dinner. I don’t know yet if I’ll give her the meat on her first attempt, but she can definitely have a play with the broccoli, carrots and parsnips.

The one thing that does scare me about BLW is choking and gagging. I really want to go on a first aid course to learn how to deal with choking. For now though Channel Mum have a really useful video on how to stop a choking baby.

I always try and meal plan for us so I know what I’m buying, so it makes sense for me to continue while weaning her. It’s going to make us a lot more healthy too. The Baby Led Weaning Cookbook is amazing. All the recipes have servings for adults and a baby which I haven’t seen in most weaning cookbooks.

I’m going to start introducing one meal a day for a few days, then add lunch and then a few days later add breakfast. I want to introduce vegetables before fruit so she doesn’t just want sweet tasting food all the time. Here’s my meal plan for the first two weeks.

Sunday: Roast chicken, steamed carrots and broccoli and roasted parsnips

Monday: Pie for us with steamed broccoli and mange tout

Tuesday: Burger for us with sweet potato fries and banana

Wednesday: Salmon teriyaki for us with broccoli and green beans

Thursday: Chicken, roasted cauliflower and carrots

Friday: Banana pancakes // Avocado pesto pasta for us, salt-free rice cakes with avocado mash

Saturday: Cheese on toast // Avocado pesto pasta for us, penne and an avocado slice

Sunday: Cheese and pesto pinwheels and banana // Stew with broccoli and cauliflower

Monday: Pizza toast. Leftover stew with mashed parsnip and broccoli

Tuesday: Stew soup with bread for dipping and porridge fingers and pear // Beef, broccoli and pepper stir fry

Wednesday: Baked potato with cheese and tuna // Meatballs in tomato sauce with penne.

Thursday: Porridge // Hummus with warm pitta and cucumber // Homemade pizza

Friday: Porridge with squashed blueberries // Cheese and ham pinwheels // Lemon and tarrogan chicken with pasta

Saturday: Scotch pancakes with mashed banana // Carrot muffins and apple // Grilled salmon with mashed potato and asparagus

Sunday: Scrambled eggs on toast // Roast dinner with carrots, parsnips, broccoli and baby corn // Scone fingers with crushed raspberries

You can find out more about why we’ve decided to do baby led weaning in this video.
