In May I started a mission to get off my arse, so I decided to follow the Couch to 5K program. One reason I decided on running  rather than other exercise is that I’ve always wanted to do a 5km race and it’s on my 30 before 30 list.

I found a couple of ladies from my local area who wanted to do it also with the aim of doing a parkrun at the end. We’re really lucky that on our development there’s a huge park with a path that goes all around it, which has been perfect for building up stamina and getting to 5km. There are so many great running routes in the area which I can’t wait to explore now!

New running trainers for parkrun

Couch to 5K

Week one – Bloody hell I am so unfit I can’t even run for 60 seconds very well. And I look like a beetroot!

Week two – Okay, this isn’t too bad, but why oh why are we running up all these hills. Are you trying to kill me?

Week three – I shouldn’t have looked ahead. How am I going to run for five minutes next week, the thought of running for 3 minutes straight this week is beyond me.

Week four – I’ve realised I need more practise. I can’t go running out with the ladies without seeing if I can actually do it first. So now I’m running 4-5 times a week to get in a practise with my other half first. Actually, this five minute run isn’t so bad. I CAN do it. Maybe it’s all in my head.

Week five – Bring it on! All the runs were different this week and the idea of running 20 minutes straight filled me with dread. But y’know what, really easy! Okay, not quite. It scared the hell out of me and I thought I wouldn’t be able to do it, so I slowed myself right down and it was one of my slowest runs, but I didn’t stop.

Week six – After running 20 minutes straight last week I thought this would be a breeze. I was exhausted come the first day and really struggled through it. Day two wasn’t that bad and running 22 minutes straight felt okay. I slowed it down just as much as I had last week and I did it without collapsing in a heap on the floor. Red faced and puffing along I’m glad week six is done.

Looking back on the six weeks so far, I’ve come a really long way. About this time last year I tried the Couch to 5K with my other half and failed during week three. The first run of week one and two I couldn’t even finish. I was probably going too fast at his pace which is why I failed so miserably. I am really happy with how far I’ve come and excited that in three weeks time I’ll be running my first parkrun!

Week seven – Oh my gosh I’m running 25 minutes flat, that’s nearly half an hour. That’s so very close to my goal. Or is it? Looking at my mileage I’m nowhere near 3 miles or 5km in those 25 minutes. Will I get anywhere close in 30 minutes?

Anyway, I did it! I completed week seven and it felt good!

Week eight – The final week in this app. Two runs at 28 minutes and then a 30 minutes run. My second run this week I had really bad tummy muscles. I’d managed to pull them and they were so sore the day after Day 6 of #30DaysofYoga (which is amazing. DO IT). But I managed to plod on through even though it was only my 11th fastest run. Day 3 I did on my own in the middle of a lovely hot sunny day. That was a mistake! I don’t think I’ve sweated that much in this whole process (sorry TMI). It was so ridiculously hot and there wasn’t any shade. Every few minutes I’d look at my watch and really struggled through slowly. The only thing that got me through was listening to the Undisclosed podcast. But hey, I’ve completed the app!

Parkrun first timer

Setting my alarm for 6:45 on a weekend was a huge challenge. Parkrun doesn’t start til 9am but I really wanted some porridge for breakfast and I wanted to eat two hours before the run so a 7am breakfast call was a must. Breakfast down we headed to the parkrun early so we could find somewhere to park. Luckily I’m always super early as we ended up in the wrong place and had to drive around to the right car park after much faffing with google maps.

I was nervous but I needn’t have been. There was someone there to give us newbies a brief on what will happen and what the route is which was really reassuring. The route was quite flat and going through some playing fields and then around a lake. It was beautiful but my goodness it was hot! I was praying for rain half way around. It seemed to go on forever.

I found it hard to remember what my normal pace was and so I was getting frustrated with myself that I had to walk a couple of times for 30 seconds to get my breath back. Each time I walked my knees would hurt so I started running again. Looking at my runkeeper I was keeping a faster pace than usual which was probably why I felt exhausted!

But I did it! I got lapped TWICE! Although I think the chap that lapped me twice was actually running further as I saw him finish while I was still on my first lap (how on earth do people do it in under 18 minutes?!). I got cheered on which is always helpful – even on my runs around the park at home I sometimes get a cheer from walkers – it gave me that boost to keep going. When I rounded the last corner I sprinted (as much as I could anyway) to the finish and picked up my token. I really wanted to collapse right there but I got my barcode and token scanned and went for a walk to cool off.

It definitely was a challenge but I can’t wait til next week! Time: 34:56 I’m very happy with that!

What next?

Having a challenge seems to be what gets me out exercising so I’ve decided to carry on with zenlabs app and do the 10km training plan. I’ve started swimming once a week and hope that on the weekends I can either go cycling or for a longer walk so I’m mixing up my exercise with a bit of cross training. I’m also doing yoga two or three times a week in the morning as it feels like a good way to start the day. I was hoping to carry on doing yoga most days but I don’t want to over do it and injure myself. From what I’ve read, rest days are just as important.

Avocado pesto pasta

This is a really super easy avocado pesto recipe, which I recently made when I ate veggies for a week. I think it’s pesto anyway. What makes a pesto a pesto? Whatever it is, it taste good! I use this with pasta and add chicken or tuna with it. Or on toast with some scrambled eggs for breakfast (lunch and dinner).

Shock horror I’m not a huge fan of avocado and there’s no way you’ll see my breakfasts on Instagram of avocado on toast with a poached egg. I will eat it but it’s not my first choice of vegetable. However I like it in this, perhaps it’s the cheese that does it for me.

Abbotsbury Swannery

Abbotsbury Swannery

Abbotsbury Swannery

Last weekend we had a day out with my parents. They weren’t sure where to go so they let me decide between Swanage (which I remember going to in primary school) or a swannery. Now I love animals but I have a bit of a fear of big birds. I always think they’re going to chase me, especially peacocks, they’re the worst offenders. As soon as I heard that there were cygnets being born I jumped at the chance to go. It’s also the only place in the world where nesting mute swans are managed like this.

It’s quite a hefty price to go visit but as we arrived quite late in the day they offered us a discount. As soon as we walked through I saw tiny cygnets on the path in front of me. They are adorable! We walked on through to the end where there is the fleet lagoon. We arrived just before the 4pm talk and feeding session. There were hundreds of swans waiting to be fed, it was an unbelievable sight. The talk was very insightful and I definitely recommend getting there to listen to it. I wish I had taken my camera rather than just my phone as there swans were beautiful.

If you’re near Chesil beach this is a must see. Breeding season is coming to an end, but you can see the little cygnets grow up.

Black rice with broccoli

Last week I attempted to eat vegetarian meals for the week. This may sound really easy and a bit ridiculous, but I’m very fussy. Growing up I had a diet of chicken, bread and gravy or steak pie, bread and gravy with not much variation on those two meals. If we went out for pizza I’d have it tomato sauce free.

At the age of 16 I was introduced to pasta and rice, which I liked but still refused vegetables. By the time I was 21 I was getting better but limited to roasted carrots and parsnips with a roast dinner.

Now, closer to 30 than 20, I am eating a lot better but I’d never really consider having a dish without meat or fish. So I challenged myself to eat meat free for a week. I allowed some fish but that’s it.

Monday and Tuesday spiced carrot soup

Vegetable soup is one of my favourites (as long as it’s blended – still fussy) and I usually go for my versatile veggie soup. This time I made a spiced carrot soup which was absolutely delicious.

Wednesday Quinoa, salmon and broccoli

I picked up Deliciously Ella’s book a month or so ago and I’ve been dying to try out some recipes. I managed to find tahini and tamari in my local Sainsbury’s so I was set to make this recipe for easy quinoa with sautéed veggies. I left out the courgette because I was using this as a side rather than a main meal.

Deliciously Ella's quinoa with salmon

Thursday black rice and broccoli

This is another Deliciously Ella recipe called warm wild rice salad. The black rice turned my wooden spoon purple! While I was making this up I’d put the raisins in boiling water to soak and completely forgot about them. It wasn’t until my other half was washing up and said what on earth are these that I realised I’d completely forgotten to add them to the meal.

Friday avocado pasta

Yummy avocado, basil and parmesan pesto with tuna and tagliatelle. This is such an easy recipe but I recommend making the pesto in a food processor rather than squeezing it into a coffee grinder and trying not to spill it everywhere. I really need to buy a food processor!

Saturday – oh dear

We were out with the in laws today and headed to Starbucks for lunch. There wasn’t much choice so I ended up with a sausage roll. Oops. It wasn’t even very nice. For dinner we headed to Pizza Express and I had salmon risotto so that’s a tick.

Sunday – even worse

We visited my parents on Sunday and ended up at Pizza Express again. I went for the new Margherita Bufala but added ham on top. I don’t even know why I added ham, but I ruined my veg free week again.

Even though I had a few slip ups I’m excited that I managed to eat so many meals without meat. It’s made me try black rice and quinoa and although I’ll never go meatfree, I can mix it up, use these as sides to meat and fish, and enjoy trying new veggie dishes.

What are your favourite veggie dishes?

I’ve recently changed my evening routine so that I’m not glued to my phone until just before I nod off. I’m trying to change my diet, my exercise and my mood as I haven’t been sleeping very well and have been a bit of a handful when grumpy.

Primark nighties

I think one of the things that was making me such a grump in the morning was my lack of a good nights sleep so I’ve changed my routine. And there was no way I would start changing my evenings without treating myself to some new PJs. As it’s a bit hot I decided to try some nighties and found these two pretty ones in Primark. They always do the best nightwear and I won’t get it from anywhere else.

6pm

My evening routine starts pretty much from when I get home from work and take my make up off. After that I cook some food. I used to eat dinner about 7-8pm and I don’t think that really suited me. I now try and cook as soon as I get in from work so dinner is ready by 6pm. This gives me a couple of hours to relax before some exercise.

8pm

I try and get out for a run, swim or walk at about this time to burn off some of that food. Now it’s warmer I don’t want to run any earlier. If I workout in the morning then I’ll just relax in the evening.

9pm

Bath time! Or a shower if I’m being good saving water. I try to switch off at this time. I listen to a relaxing playlist while in the bath – my favourite at the moment is Savasana by Yoga Girl Rachel Brathen. I love using Lush bath bombs but for everyday I use Dove’s bath cream.

sweet dreams

10pm

Time for a good book and then bed. I’m trying to wake up earlier while we have these sunny mornings so I need to go to bed before midnight. I think I only really need 6 hours sleep so I get to read for awhile.

What’s your evening routine?

Succulent

Baby succulents growing from cutting

Succulent propagation for wedding centrepieces

I cut the head off one of my first succulents! I wiggled and pulled off all the lower leaves and then chopped off it’s head. I was so scared that I was going to ruin it and it would die, but it seems to still be alive. Here are all the leaves lined up and I hope that they will start to root and grow new baby leaves. You can already see that the stem is growing new leaves on it. It’s so exciting seeing them come up.

If all the leaves were to grow, I’d have made 18 succulents out of the one 99p succulent I bought from Homebase. I don’t expect all of them to survive but I hope a few do.

Making a mess with compost getting the garden ready to grow salad

Salad leaves are growing well in the garden

I really want to start growing my own vegetables and decided to start small. The herbs on the kitchen windowsill are going strong and so I decided on salad leaves to accompany them. I think these are quite generic leaves and I can’t wait to try them in some summer salads. It doesn’t matter that I don’t really like salad, surely I’ll like it if I’ve grown it, right?

grass is finally growing in the garden

Oh my goodness we have grass! I can definitely see green out there. It’s only taken 9 months of living here to actually have a proper garden. My mum was going to give us a nice table and chairs but they decided to keep them, so that’s my next challenge. I really wanted it as it was old and in need of some beautiful paint. I’m really just looking for an excuse to paint furniture.

IKEA NESNA bedside table

IKEA NESNA bedside table

IKEA KORKEN glass jars

IKEA VARIERA box

IKEA DROPPAR glass jars

Malm dressing table and Alex make up storage

Last week we popped to IKEA for another bedside table for my side and typically that’s not all we came away with. We wandered around the show room to get some layout ideas and find some bits to pop into the big yellow bag.

We picked up a NESNA bedside table for our bedroom, some KORKEN glass jars that I’m using for pastas, VARIERA plastic box to put bottles in on my dressing table and DROPPAR glass jars for cotton wool pads and q-tips. We also picked up a picture frame but I’m not sure what we’re doing with it yet.

I’ve had the IKEA ALEX for years but we recently moved it into our spare room when we bought the MALM dressing table. This is very much an IKEA room, as the stool is from there too, called INGOLF. I think the cushion is also but that’s just to make it more comfy. Apologies for the screwed up hairdryer and the bags of cotton wool squished between furniture. My Alex is full and I’ve run out of storage space.

We are very slowly getting the house to how we want it to be. Moving into a new build meant we could put our own stamp on the property, but we’d spent all the money on the house so it’s slow going. As my mum keeps telling me, you don’t have to do it all at once.
