I’m not a beauty blogger but I find myself wearing more lipsticks in the winter and I wanted to share my favourites. Last year I thought I’d become obsessed with lipsticks, balms and glosses as I kept buying every new one that came out. Now I’m trying to cut back and keep only the ones that I reach for regularly. I like purple lips in the winter but also feel like a bright pink helps me feel better if I’m having a crappy grey day.

From left to right: Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in 020 Lovesick Passionnee, Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in 225 Berry Alure, Avon ColorTrend lipstick in plum fun, MUA lipstick in shade 2, Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain in 005 Crush Beguin and finally Clinique chubby stick in 01 richer raisin.

I love that the Revlon stains last forever during the day – well a few hours while drinking and eating. My favourite of all of them is the MUA lipstick as it’s an amazing colour and only cost £1. I’ve found some of their formulas a bit hit and miss, but this one slides on and doesn’t show up my dry lips in the winter.

I recently stumbled upon a pin on Pinterest with origami cranes threaded together to form a backdrop. They were all different colours and it was beautiful. So I headed to Hobbycraft for some paper and set to work trying out origami. I tend to dip in and out of crafts so I’m a beginner of everything and master of none. I’m surprised I haven’t tried origami before as it’s quite easy to do if you’re good at following instructions. Here are a few of the things I made this week.

tea

While shopping in Westfield London I stumbled upon a shop called T2, which is an Australian tea shop. I thought it was just us Brits that love our tea. There are only three stores in the UK and they’re all in London, but you can shop online – they need to add smell-o-vision to the website, where you could lean into the screen and take a deep breath in. The walls are lined with any flavour you can imagine and there are piles of beautiful cups and saucers around the room. I tasted the strawberries and cream ice tea and it tasted amazing.

I bought a box called Twenty Moments which has a collection of different teas in it. I can’t wait to try all of them but I’d been eager to get Fruitalicious after seeing it instore. I was surprised when I opened the packet to see big pieces in the teabag and I was overwhelmed with the most delicious scent. They need to bottle that! It includes cranberries, blueberries, dragon fruit and goji berries and tastes just as good as it smells. It’s a shame only one comes in the box as I now need to make another trip to London to buy more.

I like the idea of going to a hotel for the wedding where we can have the ceremony and reception all in one place, but I thought I really should check out what else we can do. Winchester has a new registry office called the Basing Room and it looks amazing. The old Pendragon Room looked good, but this is so much better in my eyes.

The Basing Room Winchester Registry Office
The Basing Room

I thought about a church wedding, but the only church I wanted to get married in I’m not allowed to. It’s St Peter’s Catholic Church in Winchester and I’m not catholic. I went to St Peter’s primary school and we used to sing carol concerts in the church. It’s beautiful in there and it would mean a lot to me to get married there, but hey ho, it wasn’t to be.

With a registry office in mind, we’ve been looking at locations for the wedding breakfast and reception. There are a lot of great pubs in Winchester which have small private dining rooms but these seem to be too small for us seating around 16-25 people. The Wykeham Arms behind the Cathedral or Chesil Rectory were at the top of my list.

When it comes to reception venues we can of course go to any of the hotels I’ve previously mentioned, but I wanted to look at other ideas. Realistically I don’t think I could cope with doing everything from scratch, having to hire such things as cutlery and tables and getting caterers in. I’ve been looking for pubs and restaurants that may fit the bill.

Bourne Valley Inn

This is a beautiful country pub which often does weddings and events in its attached barn area. It has lovely wooden beams and a eclectic mix of ornaments around the building. We met the friendly staff for a chat and settled in front of a roaring fire with a glass of wine.

We decided to stay for dinner and opted for steak. It came on a wooden board with a little pot for the sauce in. I loved the rustic nature of the presentation and it tasted delicious. However I have realised I’m not a huge fan of braised red cabbage, is it supposed to be sweet? Is it just my bizarre tastebuds?

My worry with a venue like this is that there’s no set package like the hotels, which does give you the freedom, but also terrifies me as then I have to plan more. Without a fixed price we just have to spend on the day the amount they’d usually take on a day like that. With our numbers quite small I worry that we wouldn’t meet this. My other half really likes this venue so I might just have to rise above my worries and work through it to make a magical day.

Getting married was never at the top of my priorities and with my family full of divorce I really thought that I wouldn’t bother with the whole thing, but then I fell in love – cringey but true. I’m ridiculously happy with my man and I really do find myself wanting to have a wedding day, but there are those niggling thoughts that I can’t seem to shake.

I’ve never thought about what I would want my wedding day to look like. I wasn’t like Monica in Friends with her folders of planning. I can’t imagine getting married at all. I have a small family (although actually it’s pretty big if you include all the remarriages and their families) and not many friends since I left London behind; I don’t have 100+ guests to invite to our special day. And to be fair, I’m quite a private person and wouldn’t want lot of people I barely know to be there. And don’t even get me started on bridesmaids. I’ve been told I have to have them, but I don’t have anyone to ask. How sad is that?

Magazine clippings wedding mood board

Pinterest seems like a great tool for wedding planning, but right now it’s leading to more confusion and worry than it ought to. I’ve planned five different themed weddings on there and can’t quite decipher what I actually want. I’ve no idea what colours I want, or whether to DIY the whole lot. But if it is handmade, can I mix crafts? Will it look silly? What if in reality it’s actually cheaper to just buy everything. I dabble in a lot of crafts and am a beginner at most. I have quite a short attention span and I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so if I can’t do something straight away I tend to give up.

Wedding woes are definitely getting to me. It’s why I stopped looking for the few months running up to Christmas. With that out of the way I wanted to get cracking again especially as we decided to move to date forward to October. The pressure is on to secure a venue and set a date so that family can book time off work.

One solution to all these niggles is to elope. Did you know you can run off to Mauritius and have a beautiful ceremony and two weeks holiday in a wonderful 4 star hotel for under £6,000 all-inclusive. It may seem a lot but it’s luxurious and nearly two thirds cheaper than the national average wedding cost. It may be roughly what our budget is for the wedding but you get a honeymoon included! I’m definitely still keeping this one of the cards if it all gets too much.

So from this moment forward I am taking a back seat on wedding planning. Once the venue, registrar and photographer are booked I’m going to take my time and not panic about all the other little bits. So what if we can’t afford the band of my dreams, or any band, I have Postmodern Jukebox on Spotify to keep things ticking over on the day. Does it really matter what colour everything is? Or if we don’t have a theme? It’s time to let go of all these little woes and just keep cutting out ideas until something sticks.

I got engaged in summer 2014 but haven’t been taking venue hunting too seriously as yet. Now it’s 2015 I think I should really get a move on, especially with only 9 months to go. Eek! I’m looking primarily in Hampshire as I was born in Winchester and we live nearby. As we’re having quite a small wedding, I’ve found venue hunting quite hard. I don’t need a room or marquee for 150 guests, I don’t think I even know that many people!

I whittled my list down by those offering more intimate weddings and started from there. Here are the ones we’ve visited so far.

The Winchester Royal Hotel

My mum’s in love with this venue a lot more than I am. The ceremony would take place in the conservatory restaurant and my first thought was if it rains it will be ridiculously noisy on the roof.

The White Horse Romsey
White Horse RomseyAn absolutely wonderful hotel in the heart of Romsey. Also right in the town centre with no parking, but my heart was taken by the lovely Palmerston room with a cosy log fire. However it only holds 22 adults and I’ve already been told one half of the family totals 18, so it doesn’t matter if I like the venue or not, it’s just not big enough. The venue does have bigger rooms but I’ve fallen head over heels for this room.
Forest Lodge Hotel

Have you ever tried to drive into Lyndhurst? You usually have to wait 20 minutes stuck in traffic – I always seem to latch onto the negatives first. The hotel is modern and the lighting made the room feel sophisticated and warm. I liked how friendly the staff were here as we’d just turned up unannounced and they happily showed us around.

We decided to revisit this hotel to have a chat with the manager and get more of a feel of what a wedding would be like here. The chap was really friendly and walked us through how a wedding would work in the hotel. I could imagine getting married there, although the garden was a lot smaller than others we’d seen – but what’s the likelihood of good weather in October anyway, we had tornadoes last year! I loved the fact it had a swimming pool to relax in.

Rhinefield House

Never in my dreams did I think we could afford this venue. I adore the New Forest and would love to get married there, and driving up to this hotel I had butterflies in my stomach. Actually the first time we drove up the drive and parked up I said I don’t want to go in as I’ll be heartbroken if we can’t afford it, so we went on our way. Later that day I went on their website and discovered the Keepers Room which holds 30 adults and could possibly be affordable.

So while on a day out in the New Forest we met up with one of the event co-ordinators for a chat and a look around. We settled in with a the biggest pots of coffee and tea I’ve ever seen and talked through what we may want. We could have 35 people in the Keepers Room for the ceremony before dining in the Grand Hall at one long oval table.

Esseborne Manor

Esseborne ManorSource

This is a beautiful family run hotel in an old manor house. The manager walked us through the day showing us all the rooms and the fabulous gardens. The garden looked fabulous even though it’s winter and a huge tree had fallen down. The bedrooms reminded me of my Grandad’s house and I’m not sure whether this is a good thing or not. The rooms could do with a rejuvenation even though they’re made up in an old style. The huge plus with this venue is that we could have exclusive use if we hire out the majority of the bedrooms.

All venues have given me a lot to think about. If you’re getting married in Hampshire, have you found any that have given you butterflies? If you’re elsewhere, where do you think is a really special venue?

Walking in the New Forest off Rhinefield Ornamental Drive

A drizzly cold day

IMG_0229.JPG

Cosy earmuffs on a freezing cold day

The New Forest is one of my favourite places to escape to and go for a nice long walk. There are so many places to explore, from the little towns and villages to finding a car park in the middle of nowhere. I packed up a picnic to eat in the car – it was far too cold and drizzly to find a picnic spot – and off we went to visit two wedding venues. First we headed to Rhinefield House which is up a beautiful road lined with tall trees. Afterwards we found a car park off Rhinefield Ornamental Drive and had our lunch looking out on all the dog walkers wrapped up in waterproofs and wellies. As the rain stopped we took the opportunity to go for a walk along the path, although with my nice boots rather than my walking boots we didn’t venture off the path. It was very tranquil and everyone we passed said hello. I feel like I can completely lose myself on a walk, not literally, but in my thoughts. All the stresses of life seem to ebb away while I’m out in the fresh air. I forgot about the mountain of laundry and all those niggling worries that were playing on my mind. A half hour of peace and quiet, and oh I wished the weather was better to keep on walking.

We stopped at The Lyndhurst Tea House for dessert.

IMG_0220.JPGRhubarb and apple crumble with custardWhen the rain picked up we moved on to Lyndhurst to grab some tea and cake. I love cake but what I love more at this time of year is a warm crumble, which I couldn’t resist. I ordered apple and rhubarb crumble swimming in custard and oh my goodness it was delicious! I’ve never tried rhubarb before and I think I have a new favourite pudding now. We looked around the shops before heading to our second venue of the day just outside of Lyndhurst. If it hadn’t started getting dark I would have loved to walk around and see the ponies there.

Usually when we drive around the New Forest we see donkeys by the side of the road, but the donkey count = 0. Fingers crossed for an appearance next time.
