Filofax planner insert Christmas washi tape

I’ve neglected my Filofax planner for the last few months as I felt like the regular week on two pages wasn’t a good fit for me. I’d be putting tasks under each day even though they were more for just doing whenever. So I was really excited when I spotted a week on one page and notes inserts in WH Smith for 2016. These seem like the best of both worlds, as really, I don’t have many meetings to schedule.

I’ve made it all Christmassy for December and I’ve started to write my meal plan down the side of the day. This means I can see what I’m cooking at a quick glance.

2016 diary inserts

For the new year I have the pages below from WH Smith which has the ‘Notes’ page on the left and then a week on the right. I really hope this design will work better for me. It gives me space to make notes, doodle and make lists. Here’s my attempt at some hand lettering. I’ve pinned loads onto my hand lettering Pinterest board and I want to learn!

Meal planning insert

I created this monthly spread insert by adapting a year planner from Philofaxy and changing the table to 7 by 7 cells. I’m going to try really hard to stick to meal planning by month. This means doing one huge online shop and then just popping to the shops for fresh items.

I want to try not to have such an emotional relationship with food, where I have a meal planned but then feel like crap so end up with takeaway instead. I’ve added lots of new recipes in here so I’m really excited to give them a go.

Crochet christmas wreath

Crochet christmas wreath

I’m back with another Christmas Wreath this week. I found a crochet wreath on Pinterest but there wasn’t a pattern to go with it, so I’ve tried to recreate it as best I can.

To start the crochet wreath I chained 84 which wrapped around the diameter. I’m not too accurate with sizes as I just tested it on the wreath as I went.

I used half treble crochet (half double crochet in the US) all the way through this project as I wanted it to be fast but not show through to the base. I could possibly have gotten away with trebles but htr is my very favourite stitch – does anyone else have a favourite? No? Just me?

Crochet christmas wreath

It took about 10 hours to crochet the base while rewatching episodes of Heroes on Netlix. I crocheted a long straight piece and wrapped it around the wreath. I did far too many rows and ended up unravelling quite a bit. I pinned the length together around the back of the polystyrene and used the ends to sew the lengths together. I then sewed the short ends together so the wreath fit snuggly inside.

I used pom pom makers to make the little pom poms and sewed them onto the wreath. I found a holly leaf pattern on YouTube to create them and added red bells as decoration.

Supplies

I picked up this wreath from Hobbycraft for about £3. You could use aran/worsted weight yarn but I had plenty of DK lying around and it’s so cheap to pick up for this sort of project. You could adorn the wreath with anything you like – baubles, ribbon, real holly, stars. If you didn’t want to crochet you could even just wrap the yarn around the wreath.

  • 35cm polystyrene wreath
  • Red, blue, white and green DK yarn
  • 4mm hook
  • 3.5mm hook
  • Pom pom makers (I used 3.5mm and 5.5mml)
  • Red bells
  • Needle

Primark Christmas Pyjamas

I adore Primark PJs and every year I seem to buy a ridiculous amount that I really don’t need. Is 13 pairs of pyjamas too many? I seem to have more bottoms than jeans and trousers; what does that say about me? This year I’ve restrained myself and only bought one pair of Christmas PJs; this simple reindeer design. I actually went to Primark on the hunt for plain long sleeve red tops to sleep in but the only one I could find came with these bottoms. They’re just so damn cute.

A good night’s sleep

I also bought some new Christmas bedding, which I really didn’t need but couldn’t resist the animals. I’d seen something similar (not Christmassy) in Primark a few months ago but refrained from buying it. But this stag bed set from Next was too good to resist. It’s a brushed cotton material so really cosy.

Christmas wreath supplies

I adore getting the house ready for Christmas and creating new decorations, so when Turtle Mat challenged me to create a Christmas wreath I couldn’t resist. They sent a box of supplies including the cute faux robin.

I knew I wanted the wreath to last so I decided against fresh leaves and holly, but I still wanted that flowery look. I bought a garland from The Range to wrap around the metal wreath hoop. I used the little gold bells in two bunches and attached them onto the garland. I also used some larger red bells to compliment the smaller ones. I wrapped the berries around the garland too. I didn’t use the oranges as I really want to stick to a red, green and gold theme. The robin just tops it off nicely, it’s so sweet and traditional.

This looks great hanging up on our front door, but I’ve moved it to my kitchen table as I think it will make a really lovely table centrepiece with a big pillar candle in the middle. I love how it’s turned out and it makes the room really feel Christmassy.

I’ve also made a crochet christmas wreath you can check out.

Crochet Christmas tree with bells

My Ravely favourites list is full of Christmas crochet patterns to try out and I wanted to share with you a few of my favourite ones.

Crochet Ribbon Christmas Tree – I saw this on Instagram a few days ago and just knew I had to make it. It looked like it would work up quickly, which it did, but the balls were quite fiddly so I used bells instead. I love how it turned out! I want to make more and hang them from every door knob.

Snowball Wreath – Repeat Crafter Me is my all time favourite crocheter. I love the simplicity of this snowball wreath and it looks quite quick to whip up. You could always do pompoms for the snowballs instead of crocheting them. You could even wrap yarn around the wreath instead too. US terminology.

Christmas Tree Bauble – This looks like a really easy bauble tutorial which I intend to do to help use up all the leftover dk yarn I have. You just need some stuffing to fill up the balls. US terminology.

Amigurumi Elf – Oh my god you have to see how cute this crochet elf is. Okay, this isn’t going to be a quick one but it’s on my list for next year! US terminology.

Christmas wreath – I created this wreath inspired by the snowball wreath above. I love how simple the design is but it looks impressive.

C2C Christmas blanket – I haven’t tried corner to corner crochet yet but this is definitely one I’m trying for next year. Sarah has created nine squares full of your favourite Christmas characters. I’m going to start in January and do one a month for next year, but if you’re speedy I’m sure you can get it done in time for Christmas eve snuggles on the sofa. US terminology.

Dog Paw Christmas Stocking – Because your pet really needs it’s own stocking too. I love how cute this is and I can only hope that next year I’ll have a puppy to use this stocking. I might make a cat version for my mother in law. US terminology.

Crochet Santa hat – To keep your head nice and warm here is an easy santa hat tutorial from Red Heart, and a bonus it’s in UK terminology.

Are you crocheting or crafting anything for Christmas? I’m trying to crochet a wreath at present but I keep getting distracted by an old blanket project. I hope I can get it done before advent starts!

The Black Swan Monxton

The Black Swan Monxton fireplace

The Black Swan is a lovely pub just outside Andover in the village of Monxton. Simon and I decided we were too lazy to cook for ourselves that day and were really craving a proper pub lunch. We checked Trip Advisor to see where was nearby but wasn’t in the town and decided on The Black Swan as the photos looked good and I knew how to get to Monxton – although there was no way I was going to drive down tiny country roads.

The car park is a minute walk down the road from the pub, which is to be expected really for it’s village location. There’s a sign on the entrance to mind your head, please do, even at my height of 5’3″ I bent down in fear of giving myself a huge bump to the head! It opens out to much higher ceilings so you won’t be crouching for long.

We settled in at a table and a lovely black labrador came to say hello from one of the nearby tables, so it’s definitely a dog friendly pub. The dog was relaxing in front of the warm cosy fireplace. But don’t worry if you’re cold, there’s beautiful blankets to keep you warm and snuggly in a basket.

Lunch at The Black Swan

Chicken Kiev at The Black Swan

The menu looked absolutely delicious and it was hard not to order too much. The menu is laid out in small plates, large plates, snacking plates and sides. The small plates could be a starter but are a bit bigger so a good option for lunch. I eyed the chicken kiev large plate which came with carbonara, spinach puree and some other green stuff (it was yummy). But then I saw pigs in blankets on the snacking list and I couldn’t resist. Simon went for a small plate of ham hock and some Hampshire rarebit from the snacking menu. The waitress did say we didn’t need anymore as this was quite a lot of food and she was right. I was so full!

I saw that carbonara came with the chicken kiev but I had no idea what to expect. It really was the famous pasta dish with my humungous piece of chicken and it was amazing! I would never have thought to put the two together but I’m so glad I had it. I really didn’t need a side of pigs though and I did share them.

Even though my jeans were restricting my stomach by this point I couldn’t say no to pudding. I love crumble in the winter (it was the dessert at my wedding) and it was perfect. I couldn’t finish it but I’ll definitely have that again. Simon had a dark chocolate mousse with caramel which was really really nice, almost like fudge.

We’ll definitely be heading back to The Black Swan to try more of the menu and take family there. The staff were so friendly and it was a genuinely cosy pub.

The Hambledon Winchester Christmas decorations

While on a walk around Winchester we decided to pop in to a shop called The Hambledon. It’s tucked away in The Square by the Cathedral. If you don’t know where that it, ask for the Buttercross and walk through the gap.

They had some wonderful Christmas decorations in and it felt really festive. I couldn’t resist taking a few photos of the decorations and I really want to buy the little dog above. I was too busy taking photos to think about buying anything, so I’m heading back there this weekend.

The shop is different from all the others in Winchester and has little sections selling things from clothing to candles, stationary to homeware. It’s like a mini department store. It’s a wonderful experience to go in there and the staff are really friendly and knowledgable.

Hubby bought me a Christmas present from upstairs in the womenswear section. The lady serving us said she has a cockapoo (I don’t know how we got onto this topic) and it has made me very puppy broody. So now I’m frantically researching for breeders nearby. I’ve waited so many years for a dog that 2016 has to be my year!

Now, who’s put up their Christmas tree already? Mine is going up on Saturday, I just can’t wait any longer!
