The Body Shop Milk and Honey Bath powder

A few weeks ago I popped into the Body Shop to see if they had something for my achy and stretchy pregnancy body. It was on this visit that I collapsed in a heap on the floor. Whether it was from sniffing the green tea bath salts or just because of my low blood sugar levels, I can’t be sure.

My hubby went back the next day, thanked the lovely staff for looking after me and picked up the Spa of the World Egyptian Milk and Honey Bath powder. It smelt lush in the shop so I was excited to try it out (and much better calmer for me than the green tea scent).

I’ve used this a few times now by adding 4-5 scoops with the adorable wooden spoon under running water. I don’t know how many uses I’ll get out of it as you use a lot each time but it’s a bit of a treat to use instead of regular bubble bath.

Yesterday was one of those hard days where I really needed to relax. After sprinkling in a few scoops, the bath had a lovely aroma of honey which immediately calms me down. I don’t like overpowering scents and this is really subtle so perfect for me.

Shock horror, I’m not a huge bath fan as I usually make them far too hot and then get dizzy and have to get out. This bath wasn’t too hot so I got to relax in it for ages with a good book, a cup of tea (is that weird?) and some candles flickering. My skin felt super soft by the end of it. You know what I could have done with after a bath like this, new PJs and clean bed sheets. Will remember for next time!

Does everyone’s first trimester kinda suck? I’ve never felt exhaustion like it. I’d want to nap by about 10am and then again at lunchtime and at about 3pm. Then when I got home from work! I often went to bed at 7-8pm and only wake in the night to pee a couple of times, because that’s a thing now.

I’ve been really really lucky and only been physically sick a couple of times, but that hasn’t stopped nausea pretty much all the time from weeks 6 – 10. I wore sea bands on my wrists every day so I don’t know if that helped me not being sick or not. I have had a horrible taste in my mouth most days from about 6-7 weeks which has been nasty! It meant that I wanted to eat all the time to get rid of it. The only thing I’ve found to help is chewing gum, which I’m not overly fond of but it still helps to this day.

I don’t know how I coped with working full time and the exhaustion – I definitely slowed down a bit. One weekend we visited Simon’s parents and did a lot of walking. Luckily there was also a lot of driving so as soon as we got into the car I promptly fell asleep for most of the journeys. A neck pillow, that’s what I could have done with!

First Trimester bump picture

End of the first trimester

Baby is the size of a – large ladurée macaron

My favourite moment was – Seeing baby’s tiny little foot on the ultrasound

My worst moment – Fainting while out shopping and having to wait for an ambulance to check I was okay. I now make sure I’m eating little and often to keep my blood sugars up.

I’ve been feeling – Nausea and exhausted

I’ve been buying for baby – Nothing yet

I’m missing – Running. I haven’t run since my wedding in October so the midwife said I shouldn’t really start it up again now.

I’m craving – I had a week of only wanting to eat bread swimming in gravy. I’ve also been wanting baguettes with proper butter and scones.

Things that I’ve found helpful:

  • Sea bands
  • Ginger biscuits
  • My mums ginger cake
  • Chewing gum
  • Driving myself – hubby’s driving made me feel sick

I’m into my second trimester now but I wanted to recap how my first trimester got on. Has anyone got any first or second trimester tips?

Ilam in the Peak District

The last couple of months I’ve neglected this blog because I haven’t been feeling that well. I thought this April post would be about announcing a little puppy to our family but life seems to have had other exciting plans.

Something else is joining our family instead of a puppy: a little baby. I am beyond happy to be pregnant. I know I’ll probably be screaming “I just wanted a puppy” while in labour, but we are both really excited to bring a tiny human into the world later this year.

One weekend at the end of January we headed out to Porton Aquatic Centre and when we got there I felt really queasy. I never really feel sick so I had a sneaky suspicion something was up. I waited until the next morning to take a pregnancy test and there looking back at me a few minutes later where two pink lines!

Peak District

Peak District

Last week we decided to go on a last minute trip to the Peak District for a few days. Hubby has been there lots of times and he was desperate to take me. We stayed just outside of Castleton in an Inn with views out over the reservoir. Although I didn’t have much energy, it was amazing to get away. We drove around the countryside and took in all the breathtaking views. We visited Ilam National Trust property and Lyme Park. Cream teas were had and some yummy food at The Castle pub.

On the way back we stopped at Monkey Forest in Stoke which was amazing. There were so many baby monkeys – adorable! We also popped into the Emma Bridgewater Factory shop and I couldn’t resist a few more mugs to add to my collection. From Stoke we headed towards my Grandad’s house to give him the news and he was so happy.

Netflix times

I’ve been absolutely addicted to two shows on Netflix recently. With my hubby we’ve been watching House of Cards. Yes we’re very late to the game and just finished watching season 2. Part of me really really hates it but it is so addictive.

The other show that I’ve been watching is Jane the Virgin. It’s not my usual show and maybe it’s the pregnancy that’s making me want to watch it, but I LOVE it. It’s funny, shocking, romantic and I just want to chain watch it until my TV asks me if I’m still there. Now, Netflix UK, hurry up and put season 2 up!

Bullet Journal

My poor bullet journal has been a bit neglected the past couple of months really. I set up the month and weeks but as I’ve had no energy in the evenings I haven’t had time to sit down and try new things with my diary. But that’s the great thing about it, it doesn’t matter if I miss a few weeks, it’s still there and I can migrate everything over.

I have been marking each week of my pregnancy in my buju starting from the week we found out. I wrote everything in pencil so I’ve had to go back over it in pen.

For our honeymoon we went to Mauritius and I’ve documented it in my wedding project life album. It seemed fitting to keep all the photos together in one album.

It has taken my nearly 5 months to finish my honeymoon album. I think part of it was writing out everything in pencil and then needing to go over it in pen. I just couldn’t be bothered. I finally finished it but lesson learned for next time, just go in straight away with pen and forget any mistakes. Who cares, really?

I’ve used various kits of journalling cards for this section of the album as I didn’t want it to look all the same.

Honeymoon Project Life

To be honest I struggled to journal much for the honeymoon because days were spent reading, swimming, sunbathing and eating four meals a day. I felt really guilty when I got home about that, but oh my goodness the food was too good not to eat!

We had such a wonderful honeymoon and just what we needed to get away and relax together.

Just breathe quote

weekly spread

I adore the bullet journal I set up last month. It has completely given me the freedom to get the most out of a journal. Whereas with my Filofax I struggled with finding a set up that worked, with a bullet journal I can change that every day or week if I want until I find something that works for me.

I started doing monthly spreads and then dailies. After awhile I found that I wasn’t really using dailies as I work full time and don’t use my buju for work tasks/meetings. I found that I was only entering one or two things each day and it seemed a bit of a waste. There were days where I’d just move tasks from day to day when I didn’t feel like doing it, these were mostly chores – netflix is far more fun.

Weekly Spread

Bullet Journal Weekly Layout

I decided to give up dailies for a while and try a weekly setup. I turned to the Bullet Journal Junkies Facebook group for some advice and worked out this design. There are some really good examples of weekly layouts on Tiny Ray of Sunshine.

I’ve adapted it as the weeks have gone on. I started with a weekly chore tracker, but I just didn’t fill it in so I’m not including it anymore. I’ve opted for a currently loving list which I think is quite fun and will remind me what I was addicted too that week.

New Bullet Journal collections

Tracking Futurelearn in my Bullet Journal

Bullet Journal Room layout and things to do collection

I created a page to track the modules on Futurelearn, which is a site offering free online courses on a variety of subjects. I started the course Start Writing Fiction but found that I couldn’t cope with the workload so I had to stop during week 2. I hope to start another course in the summer so this collection won’t go to waste.

Another collection is a list of things to do in and around the local area. It means if we’re ever stuck for what to do one weekend I can flip to this page and get some inspiration.

What’s worked?

Bullet Journal Weekly Layout

I have been loving the weeklies so far. I really don’t have many appointments that aren’t work related, so my days along the top mostly just contain the weather. The weekly menu is working well as I use this to write my shopping list for the week. Although, like the week featured, it doesn’t work when I’m feeling too lazy to cook!

In my monthly I’ve been using the expenses section to list down everything I buy. It’s been useful to see where all my money is going and where I could cut down.

What hasn’t worked?

Bullet Journal Monthly spread

Trackers! I just don’t fill them out. The monthly and weekly trackers are goners. I like the idea of them and they look really pretty all coloured in but they just had to go. I have created a new mini tracker for doing the Headspace app, so I’ll see how that goes. The expenses section in February was far too small, so I’ve made space for it in my March layout now the tracker has gone.

How are you setting up your bullet journal for March?

All 148 nail polish

Bye bye nail polish

Why on earth do I have so much nail polish?! Does anyone else have this many? It’s a ridiculous amount of polishes! It really doesn’t look like that many until I counted them – it was a bit of a shock. I haven’t painted my nails regularly since I lived in London, when this collection started growing. I used to do nail art and try different things – hence some of the bizarre colours. But now I work in a smart office I barely have any colour on my nails.

So it was time for a nail polish declutter. I laid the two boxes of polishes on the floor and went through each colour splitting them into a must keep pile, maybes and a don’t want (much bigger) pile. Actually, my keep pile began with 2 polishes before sifting the maybes. I piled up all my no’s next to Dex, one of my many doggy doorstops.

I then went through the maybes and decided on what colours I’d most likely wear again and got rid of any duplicates. I found that I had a few of the same colours from the same brands – I obviously at some point loved them so much that when I spotted it I just had to have it. I do remember trying to keep an inventory at one point so I could check before purchasing.

To whittle them down I asked myself the following questions:

  1. What does this colour say about me? – is it suitable for work?
  2. Will I wear it on the weekend?
  3. Is it easy to apply and lasts?
  4. Is it going to be a pain to get off? (e.g. glitter)
  5. Are there any other similar colours that I prefer?

Nail polish to keep

Nail polish I'm keeping

I feel so good that I’ve managed to declutter 111 polishes. I have kept five base/top coats and oils, and I have 32 colours that I’m keeping for now. I’ve put them in a box in my dresser so they’re easy to reach; hopefully I’ll use them more often. By summer I’m going to look at all the wintery shades left and if I haven’t used them they will be tossed too.

Is anyone else trying to declutter? I’m going through one lot of items at a time. This one was hard as I feel I’ve probably wasted hundreds of pounds and I feel really guilty. It’s time to let go.

Granny Square Crochet Blanket in pinks and creams

Granny Square Crochet Blanket in pinks and creams

It’s my mum’s birthday today and I wanted to make her something as part of her presents. I decided on a granny square blanket as she has two really old worn ones on her sofas at the moment.

I went for one huge granny square as I needed something that would be fast to work up as I didn’t have much time. I used Stylecraft Special Aran yarn in cream, fondant and pomegranate. I used two 100g balls of each colour. This was really easy to do and I followed this granny square blanket pattern on Ravelry. My mum’s favourite colour is bright pink so I had to use those shades and I think it will go well with her sofas.

Next time I’d probably buy 3 balls of the third colour used as I nearly ran out. As it is I only did two rounds of the granny square pattern before doing htr all around. I also used bright pink for my picot edging as I was pretty much out of cream. It came out at 33 inches which is perfect for a lap blanket. I really hope she likes it.

This is one of the easiest projects I’ve done. If you’d like to see others you can view my Ravelry portfolio. Do you like crochet or knitting? If so, I’d definitely recommend Ravelry for lots of free patterns and a really helpful forum for when you get stuck or want to chat.
